This year, the worker’s union ‘Unite’ will be holding their general secretary election. Jerry Hicks, a major candidate and long-time union member, will be speaking at a rally on Monday 11 October, starting at 7:30 pm.
Speaking alongside Hicks will be Ken Loach, director of the films ‘Bread and Roses,’ ‘Land and Freedom,’ and ‘Riff-Raff’, as well as Steve Hedley of the RMT, Ray Morell of Unite and many more.
Jerry Hicks believes, “We need to instill confidence in members so they have the courage to fight, within the law preferably. But if the circumstances dictate otherwise we should be prepared to confront the anti-union laws. When someone fights back, the union has to put everything behind them to win a victory for the class as a whole. When a group of workers walk out, or better still sit-in and occupy, they need to know that their union will back them – not repudiate them.”
The rally will be held at the Indian YMCA, 41 Fitzroy Square, W1T 6AQ. The nearest tube station is Warren Street.
