“I, Daniel Blake” and the benefits system

This has been one of the more significant and moving films on UK austerity, what it has meant to the country and its impact on the people. A showing of this Ken Loach work, followed by a discussion on how to rally against Universal Credit.

 Nathan Raia

The movie talks about the benefits system, underlining all its negative aspects and  criticises the Universal Credit, a benefit payment scheme for people living in the United Kingdom that are in or out of work. It replaces some benefits and tax credits that some people might be getting now such as housing benefit, child tax credit, income support, working tax credit, income-based jobseeker’s allowance and income-related employment and support allowance.

North London Revolutionary Communist Group and RCG – Revolutionary Communist Group, the organisations that are hosting the event, say that: “the government knows that it has created chaos and poverty and is now panicked into delaying the full implementation of Universal Credit while it ‘monitors’ the situation”.

Furthermore, they add that the Labour Party has only called for a pause and reviewwhilst RCG say that Universal Credit cannot be reviewed but has to be scrapped.

In addition, they have stated: “We must not stop or let up on the fightback against this cruel and unjust programme which is yet another part of the ‘austerity’ and cutbacks for the working class under capitalism in crisis”.

Moreover, to reinforce their point, on the 18th of January they shared a post on Facebook which said: “More than 17,000 sick and disabled people die while waiting for welfare benefits, figures show”.
