August of arts and artisanship in Cuba

Summertime on the island is synonymous with an explosion of cultural events and August is now the month when authorities pull off a free programme for the general public designed by everyone, for everyone. One event, in particular, is a hit with the people.

The Feria de Artesanía Arte en La Rampa, one of the most popular events, brings together artisan crafts of all kinds, music and food in the Pabellón Cuba in Havana, an oasis for recreation in the summer months.

This year, Arte en La Rampa is in its 20th year and new and intriguing propositions will be offered to the Cuban and international public with the best work from local artisans and artists on display.

The event brings together many different examples of craftsmanship including shoe-making, textiles, metalwork, ceramics, glass, and reproductions of art and furniture.

Under one roof, more than 60 stands will display the work of creators from the capital and provinces of Cienfuegos, Artemisa and Mayabeque, showing their work not only for commercial ends but also to create a space where art can be enjoyed during the summertime.

The large offering of hand-made products is accompanied by a full-on cultural programme where music has to be the main event thanks to the Criolla tradition.

For the island and its inhabitants, music and its enjoyment is a serious business. Therefore, the organisers of Arte en la Rampa, in collaboration with other cultural institutions like record labels and artists agencies, have put on a programme of concerts, live sessions and talks.

Spaces have also been created to showcase creators working in other mediums including theatre, dance, the visual arts and literature.

The cultural calendar has events scheduled until 1 September, and music events take place at different times each day.

The Pabellón’s usual listings will take place as normal during the day, concerts in the central patio will take place in the late afternoon, with the trova, jazz and repentismo sessions and spaces created for children.

According to the Arte en La Rampa programme, artists with large followings are set to appear on the Main Stage during the month of August including Arnaldo y su talismán, Miguel Failde, rapper Telmary, Haydée Milanés, Athanai and Polito Ibáñez, to mention a few.

At the same time, there will be opportunities to hear from cultural figures, actors, directors, artists, musicians and other popular personalities on the Cuban scene.

Every year, the Ministry of Culture, the Fondo Cubano de Bienes Culturales and the Asociación Hermanos Saiz with other groups working under the Cultural System for the island, produce the Feria de la Cultura Cubana Arte en La Rampa which, to quote the organisers, is becoming one of Cuba’s main summer cultural attractions.
