Uno de los mayores mitos de la cultura occidental, y ejemplo absoluto de la tesis de la \u00abverosimilitud\u00bb del soci\u00f3logo Peter Berger, es que la cohabitaci\u00f3n es absolutamente necesaria e ideal como primer paso para que un matrimonio sea estable y duradero, porque s\u00f3lo as\u00ed puede establecerse la compatibilidad.<\/em><\/p>\n

Para \u00abtodo el mundo\u00bb supuestamente, en particular dentro de ciertos grupos de edad dentro del Reino Unido (y otras naciones del mundo angloparlante), esto es \u00abnormal\u00bb, y por lo tanto tiene plausibilidad. Y ello a pesar de las estad\u00edsticas que durante d\u00e9cadas han demostrado lo contrario en un gran n\u00famero de pa\u00edses. Pero, \u00bfqui\u00e9n quiere leerlas?<\/p>\n

\u00bfPor qu\u00e9? \u00bfPor qu\u00e9 esta negaci\u00f3n colectiva de la realidad? \u00bfPor qu\u00e9 la gente prefiere creer en el mito?<\/p>\n

Sin duda, hay muchos factores en juego. El enorme aumento de la sexualizaci\u00f3n de la cultura, con un incremento paralelo del individualismo y de las actitudes contrarias a la autoridad, parece contribuir a facilitarlo. La verg\u00fcenza asociada a la cohabitaci\u00f3n ya no se aplica, ya que el individualismo y la alfabetizaci\u00f3n aumentan juntos. De este modo, se ridiculiza el matrimonio, por ejemplo, \u00abconden\u00e1ndolo con elogios d\u00e9biles\u00bb, como hizo una madre que cohabitaba con su hija que quer\u00eda casarse (aunque despu\u00e9s de haber cohabitado ella misma), por ser \u00abtradicional\u00bb.<\/p>\n

Un factor interesante y poco conocido es el papel que desempe\u00f1a la oxitocina, seg\u00fan observa el profesor John Caccioppo, neur\u00f3logo de la Universidad de Chicago, en su excelente libro \u201cLa soledad\u201d<\/em>. \u00bfPor qu\u00e9 es tan importante la oxitocina? La oxitocina es una hormona y un neurotransmisor. Ayuda a generar confianza en (por ejemplo), el v\u00ednculo madre-beb\u00e9, en la lactancia y el contacto f\u00edsico. Ah\u00ed radica el problema. Es esta funci\u00f3n de crear v\u00ednculos de confianza la que hace que la oxitocina sea tan importante, para bien y para mal, dependiendo de c\u00f3mo se utilice esta confianza y de si es mutua.<\/p>\n

\"\"Las disfunciones potenciales de la cohabitaci\u00f3n prematrimonial residen en si la oxitocina se libera prematuramente, antes de que se establezca cualquier tipo de base s\u00f3lida para vincular la relaci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n

El v\u00ednculo entre adultos no puede basarse \u00fanicamente en hormonas y neurotransmisores, sino en las realidades mundanas de la vida y, en particular, en lo mucho que una pareja tiene en com\u00fan y lo bien que se comunica, por citar dos de los factores m\u00e1s importantes.<\/p>\n

Tener un sistema de valores com\u00fan es importante (una persona sin valores es intr\u00ednsecamente inestable, se deja llevar por cualquier grupo de presi\u00f3n y es incapaz de evaluar cr\u00edticamente a las personas o los movimientos), como tambi\u00e9n lo es la madurez personal (que incluye cosas como la apertura, la flexibilidad, la capacidad de perdonar, la capacidad de tener un comportamiento adecuado, etc.). Todas estas cosas son m\u00e1s importantes para un matrimonio duradero, estable y amoroso, que un viaje de oxitocina. Es maravilloso dar y recibir caricias f\u00edsicas, pero no es una base adecuada para una relaci\u00f3n a largo plazo. La oxitocina es obviamente muy importante, porque la vinculaci\u00f3n es muy importante.<\/p>\n

\"\"Pero ese v\u00ednculo tambi\u00e9n puede ser muy disfuncional, dependiendo de la crianza anterior y de los valores y comportamientos personales. La codependencia inadecuada es un ejemplo de ello.<\/p>\n

Por t\u00e9rmino medio, la cohabitaci\u00f3n (ya sea heterosexual u homosexual) es breve: poco m\u00e1s de dos a\u00f1os en el Reino Unido. Los matrimonios duran muchos m\u00e1s a\u00f1os. Lejos de ser una base para la tiran\u00eda, un buen matrimonio libera a una persona hacia una nueva libertad, especialmente lejos de la de la auto-obsesi\u00f3n.
