A sus 100 a\u00f1os de edad, Maruja Vieira- una de las m\u00e1s notables poetas de Nuestra Am\u00e9rica-, cree en la felicidad de los seres humanos, en su pa\u00eds, en la mujer colombiana y en la de todas las latitudes del planeta; cree en la juventud, en los poetas j\u00f3venes de ambos sexos, en la reivindicaci\u00f3n del medio ambiente, en la paz y, desde luego, en las virtudes irracionales de la poes\u00eda.<\/em><\/p>\n

Maruja naci\u00f3 en Manizales, el 25 de diciembre de 1922. Hija de Joaqu\u00edn Vieira Gaviria, de filiaci\u00f3n conservadora, y de Mercedes White Uribe, prima del caudillo liberal Rafael Uribe Uribe. Ella recuerda que cuando era muy ni\u00f1a, su hermano mayor, Gilberto, le regal\u00f3 una antolog\u00eda de Antonio Machado, con lo cual qued\u00f3 prendada de la poes\u00eda para el resto de su vida.<\/p>\n

A\u00f1os m\u00e1s tarde, la familia se traslad\u00f3 a Bogot\u00e1, donde Mar\u00eda (que era su nombre original) comenz\u00f3 a escribir y a publicar sus primeros versos en los suplementos de los diarios capitalinos. Cuando el poeta chileno Pablo Neruda visit\u00f3 a Colombia en 1943, ella le mostr\u00f3 sus recortes y \u00e9l, admirado, le dijo:<\/p>\n

\u2013 En Chile a las Mar\u00edas les dicen Maruca. Aqu\u00ed \u00bfc\u00f3mo las llaman?<\/p>\n

-Maruja\u2013 respondi\u00f3 la joven.<\/p>\n

\u2013 Pues de ahora en adelante \u2013le dijo solemnemente el autor de Residencia en la tierra- te llamar\u00e1s Maruja: Maruja Vieira.<\/p>\n

\"\"En 1947 public\u00f3 su libro inicial\u00a0 \u201cCampanario de lluvia\u201d<\/em>, al que le siguieron: \u201cLos poemas de enero\u201d<\/em>, \u201cPoes\u00eda\u201d<\/em>, \u201cPalabras de la ausencia\u201d<\/em>, \u201cClave m\u00ednima\u201d<\/em>, \u201cMis propias palabras\u201d<\/em>, \u201cTodo lo que era m\u00edo\u201d y \u201cTiempo de la memoria\u201d,<\/em> entre otros.<\/p>\n

Al a\u00f1o siguiente hizo parte del grupo de Los Cuadern\u00edcolas, bautizado as\u00ed por el cr\u00edtico Hernando T\u00e9llez, porque los j\u00f3venes vates daban a conocer su producci\u00f3n en peque\u00f1os cuadernos o \u201cplaquettes\u201d. Adem\u00e1s de Maruja\u2013 \u00fanica mujer del grupo-, se destacaban Fernando Charry Lara, Rogelio Echavarr\u00eda, Fernando Arbel\u00e1ez, Jorge Gait\u00e1n Dur\u00e1n, \u00c1lvaro Mutis, Guillermo Pay\u00e1n-Archer, Carlos Medell\u00edn y Daniel Arango, entre otros, y se reun\u00edan en el Caf\u00e9 Autom\u00e1tico, El Windsor y El Molino, con poetas de las generaciones anteriores como Le\u00f3n de Greiff, Luis Vidales, Jorge Zalamea, Juan Lozano y Lozano (Los Nuevos) y Jorge Rojas, Eduardo Carranza y Arturo Camacho Ram\u00edrez (Piedra y Cielo).<\/p>\n

Entre 1950 y 1955, Maruja Vieira vivi\u00f3 en Venezuela y all\u00ed trabajo en programas radiales dedicados a la cultura en Caracas. All\u00ed trab\u00f3 amistad con Alejo Carpentier, Antonia Palacios, el poeta espa\u00f1ol exiliado Antonio Aparicio y los colombianos Jaime Tello y Hernando Vega Escobar.<\/p>\n

\"\"De regreso a Colombia se radic\u00f3 con su madre en Popay\u00e1n, la Ciudad- Remanso, que le da t\u00edtulo a uno de sus libros estelares. En Popay\u00e1n vivi\u00f3 inicialmente en \u201cBelalc\u00e1zar\u201d, la c\u00e9lebre casa campestre del maestro Guillermo Valencia. Luego fund\u00f3 una librer\u00eda con el nombre del poeta parnasiano y sostuvo una bella amistad con el humanista Baldomero San\u00edn Cano, al igual que con \u00c1lvaro P\u00edo Valencia, hijo del maestro, y uno de los m\u00e1s destacados pensadores marxistas del pa\u00eds.<\/p>\n

Finalizando la d\u00e9cada de los 50 conoci\u00f3 al poeta Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00eda Vivas Balc\u00e1zar, con quien contrao matrimonio en septiembre de 1959. El 15 de mayo de 1960, Vivas falleci\u00f3 repentinamente a los 42 a\u00f1os, y tres meses despu\u00e9s naci\u00f3 en Cali Ana Mercedes, el fruto de ese amor imperecedero.<\/p>\n

De nuevo radicada en Bogot\u00e1, con su hija, Maruja Vieira desempe\u00f1\u00f3 importantes cargos en institucionales culturales lo mismo que como catedr\u00e1tica de comunicaci\u00f3n social en varias universidades. A Maruja no le han gustado jam\u00e1s los honores ni los alamares del poder y ha procurado siempre alejarse de los poderosos y de las fiestas palaciegas, pues su temperamento siempre ha tendido al bajo perfil y a la discreci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n

\"\"Sin embargo, ha recibido innumerables premios y reconocimientos por su excelente obra literaria. El compositor Lisandro Varela le compone un bambuco titulado Maruja Vieira. Desde 1991 es miembro correspondiente de la Academia Colombiana de la Lengua y miembro de N\u00famero de la Real Academia Espa\u00f1ola. En 1997, al cumplirse 50 a\u00f1os de la publicaci\u00f3n de su libro primigenio Campanario de lluvia, el Instituto Caldense de Cultura, realiz\u00f3 una edici\u00f3n conmemorativa de dicha obra.<\/p>\n

En 1989, el presidente de Chile, Ricardo Lagos Escobar, le otorg\u00f3 la Orden Gabriela Mistral, en Grado M\u00e1ximo y el 2012, el Ministerio de Cultura la galardona con el Premio Vida y Obra, el m\u00e1ximo reconocimiento oficial que se concede en Colombia. PL<\/p>\n
