Empezar a hacer periodismo\u00a0 en el RU fue todo un reto, sobre todo por el hecho de ser africano. Pero Baillor Jalloh estaba decidido y quer\u00eda contar historias con autenticidad. Hoy es cofundador de <\/em>African Voices Platform<\/em><\/a>, <\/em>un n\u00facleo medi\u00e1tico donde los africanos puedan verse y o\u00edrse reflejados en las historias que se cuentan sobre la vida en el continente.<\/em>\u00a0 Serie de The Prisma: \u00abPeriodistas e inmigrantes en el RU\u00bb.<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Muchos periodistas j\u00f3venes conocen el s\u00edndrome del impostor.<\/p>\n

Pero para Baillor Jalloh, nacido en Liberia, el sentimiento de no pertenencia iba m\u00e1s all\u00e1 de la ansiedad interna.<\/p>\n

Al principio de su carrera, Baillor, de 38 a\u00f1os, acud\u00eda a las ruedas de prensa s\u00f3lo para que le preguntaran si estaba perdido y si necesitaba ayuda para orientarse.<\/p>\n

\u201cTen\u00eda que identificarme con mi placa\u201d, recuerda.<\/p>\n

La lucha de Baillor por ser reconocido como periodista -en el sentido m\u00e1s literal- es sintom\u00e1tica de un problema que afecta a todo el sector.<\/p>\n

El 88% de los periodistas empleados en el Reino Unido son blancos, seg\u00fan el \u00faltimo Informe sobre Diversidad<\/a> del Consejo Nacional de Periodistas, una cifra que se eleva al 93% entre los redactores.<\/p>\n

\u201cQuer\u00eda hacer periodismo y que me pagaran por ello. Pero poner el pie en la puerta fue todo un reto, sobre todo por el hecho de ser africano, negro, por mi acento y por no haber nacido en este pa\u00eds\u00bb, explica.<\/p>\n

Pero lo logr\u00f3 y en su trayectoria Baillor suma una d\u00e9cada de trabajo para diversos medios de comunicaci\u00f3n, entre ellos 54 Etats-le Magazine de l’Afrique y Sheffield Live.<\/p>\n

Y el car\u00e1cter dominantemente blanco de la industria tiene implicaciones en su producci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n

Baillor decidi\u00f3 dedicarse al periodismo al darse cuenta de que las historias africanas contadas por los principales medios de comunicaci\u00f3n carec\u00edan de la misma complejidad, textura y variedad que las historias contadas sobre el mundo angloamericano.<\/p>\n

Baillor cree que el poder narrativo de los medios de comunicaci\u00f3n hace que estas pobres representaciones del continente africano tengan un efecto real en la pol\u00edtica mundial.<\/p>\n

\"\"Podr\u00eda decirse que este enfoque de la narraci\u00f3n deber\u00eda incorporarse al periodismo desde el principio, de modo que la identidad o los antecedentes de la persona que informa fueran irrelevantes. La expectativa de que los periodistas africanos estar\u00e1n mejor preparados que sus hom\u00f3logos angloamericanos para cubrir los temas africanos con la sensibilidad y los matices adecuados corre el riesgo de liberar a estos \u00faltimos de la obligaci\u00f3n de desarrollar las habilidades y los conocimientos necesarios para hacer lo mismo.<\/p>\n

Aunque African Voices Platform se dirige principalmente a los afrodescendientes, ya que es la primera emisora de radio de Sheffield dedicada \u00edntegramente a temas africanos, Baillor tambi\u00e9n considera que su contenido es relevante para el p\u00fablico blanco.<\/p>\n
