La pandemia y el duelo atraviesan \u201cFried fish and plantain\u201d, el cortometraje del cineasta canadiense de origen ecuatoriano Paul Daniel Torres. A trav\u00e9s de dos j\u00f3venes de Toronto, la pel\u00edcula explora los v\u00ednculos afectivos y las huellas que la experiencia migratoria de una generaci\u00f3n deja en la siguiente, mientras el director reflexiona sobre el colonialismo y el privilegio.<\/em><\/p>\n

La literatura ha explorado de distintas maneras los efectos de la separaci\u00f3n en los v\u00ednculos humanos. En \u201cLa Odisea\u201d<\/em>, la prolongada ausencia de Odiseo pone a prueba su relaci\u00f3n con Pen\u00e9lope antes de su reencuentro. En \u201c1984\u201d<\/em>, la tortura destruye el amor de Winston y Julia. En \u201cDe ratones y hombres\u201d<\/em>, la muerte accidental de la mujer de Curley precipita la ruptura definitiva del v\u00ednculo entre George y Lennie.<\/p>\n

Pero las separaciones y las p\u00e9rdidas no est\u00e1n confinadas a los libros.\u00a0Durante la pandemia del Covid-19, las medidas de aislamiento y el miedo al contagio dificultaron el contacto personal. Quienes viv\u00edan lejos de sus pa\u00edses de origen sufrieron la ausencia de sus familiares y de sus seres queridos, tanto de aquellos que estaban lejos como la de sus vecinos en su nueva ciudad. Y as\u00ed lo vivi\u00f3 la di\u00e1spora latinoamericana.<\/p>\n

De esas vivencias, y de las preguntas que suscitan sobre los v\u00ednculos afectivos, surge \u201cFried fish and plantain\u201d<\/em>. Ambientado en un Toronto pospand\u00e9mico, el cortometraje dirigido y protagonizado por Paul Daniel Torres explora la experiencia de los hijos de migrantes latinoamericanos, cuyas vidas est\u00e1n marcadas por las p\u00e9rdidas y por la herencia emocional de la generaci\u00f3n anterior. Pero, sobre todo, busca responder una pregunta dif\u00edcil: \u00bfc\u00f3mo amar despu\u00e9s de la p\u00e9rdida? Marisol y Willy, dos j\u00f3venes protagonistas, se reencuentran en un paseo y tratan de descifrar lo que queda de sus v\u00ednculos tras esa experiencia.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/em>Durante la primera edici\u00f3n del London Latino Film Festival<\/a>, que tuvo lugar entre el 2 y EL 6 de octubre de este a\u00f1o y en el cual fue presentado el cortometraje, The Prisma<\/strong> entrevist\u00f3 a Paul Daniel Torres para ahondar en la experiencia de quienes heredan la historia migratoria de sus familias sin haber migrado ellos mismos.<\/p>\n

\u00bfPor qu\u00e9 usar el Covid para su creaci\u00f3n art\u00edstica?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Es una experiencia conjunta, as\u00ed que crea un tema universal. Todos vivimos el Covid. Un gran acontecimiento global inspira diferentes historias, como lo hace la Segunda Guerra Mundial, por ejemplo.\u00a0En el Covid, algo por lo que ha muerto tanta gente y por lo que la vida de tantos ha cambiado, todo el mundo tiene una nueva percepci\u00f3n debido a esos cambios que han pasado debido a la pandemia.\u00a0Necesitamos tener un rato en el que reflexionar sobre lo que fue, no podemos ignorarlo.<\/p>\n

Habla de cambios en los sentimientos y las vidas \u00bfQu\u00e9 bagaje emocional arrastra un inmigrante latino de segunda generaci\u00f3n?<\/strong><\/p>\n

En los inmigrantes de segunda generaci\u00f3n, como los protagonistas de mi corto, existe un bagaje emocional extra que viene de los padres. Todos los padres intentan hacerlo lo mejor posible cuando te traen al mundo, pero sigue habiendo cosas que no hicieron bien. As\u00ed que ellos tambi\u00e9n cargan con su propio bagaje y con el de sus padres.<\/p>\n

Emma (que interpreta a Marisol) y yo somos canadienses, pero tambi\u00e9n enfrentamos diferentes tipos de racismo. Somos canadienses legalmente, pero tenemos una forma de ser latina. Los canadienses son m\u00e1s callados, m\u00e1s \u201cpolite\u201d.<\/p>\n

\"\"Los latinos hablan con mucha m\u00e1s pasi\u00f3n. Nosotros amamos intensamente y sentimos las cosas intensamente. Cuando algo nos gusta, cuando nos gusta de verdad, lo expresamos con voracidad.<\/p>\n

Pero aun as\u00ed existe un cierto trauma intergeneracional.<\/p>\n

Mi padre lleg\u00f3 a Canad\u00e1 porque la industria canadiense ten\u00eda un monopolio en la industria del oro, la madera, el caf\u00e9 y el chocolate en Ecuador. As\u00ed que yo soy de donde soy debido al colonialismo. Soy producto del colonialismo, pero, al mismo tiempo, al ser canadiense, soy beneficiario de ese colonialismo.<\/p>\n

Desde mi experiencia de inmigrante de segunda generaci\u00f3n, no he tenido que luchar como hicieron mis padres. Tengo el privilegio de ser capaz de entender las cosas de otra manera.<\/p>\n

Adem\u00e1s, no tengo hijos que cuidar.<\/p>\n

Puedo preocuparme por pensar: \u00bfcu\u00e1l es mi responsabilidad como hijo de inmigrante? Somos el producto de la colonizaci\u00f3n, s\u00ed, pero tambi\u00e9n nos beneficiamos de ella, as\u00ed que \u00bfqu\u00e9 vas a hacer con ese privilegio?<\/p>\n

Yo tengo el privilegio de poder alzar mi voz por los derechos de los pueblos ind\u00edgenas en Canad\u00e1 y por lo que est\u00e1 pasando en Sud\u00e1n, en el Congo y en Palestina. Pero estamos en el coraz\u00f3n del imperio.<\/p>\n

Como inmigrante de segunda generaci\u00f3n, mi bagaje pasa por tener la perspectiva del oprimido y del opresor. De esa perspectiva nace la necesidad de reflexionar y de entender la responsabilidad de uno mismo y qu\u00e9 papel desempe\u00f1a.<\/p>\n

\"\"El trauma intergeneracional en las familias migrantes tiene su ra\u00edz en el colonialismo, as\u00ed que tenemos que entender nuestro papel en la colonizaci\u00f3n y la descolonizaci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n

Ese tipo de reflexiones, desde una mirada m\u00e1s joven, parece colarse a trav\u00e9s del lenguaje en el cortometraje \u00bfPor qu\u00e9 es importante para la cultura actual que los artistas modernos introduzcan en sus creaciones lenguajes, modas y percepciones contempor\u00e1neas?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Esa inclusi\u00f3n te da un retrato de c\u00f3mo es ser un joven en este momento. Te muestra los intereses de la gente, de los j\u00f3venes. Te muestra lo que estaban haciendo entonces, en esa \u00e9poca.\u00a0A veces queremos que las cosas sean atemporales, que no pase el tiempo, pero el arte no funciona as\u00ed. El arte es un reflejo de lo que sucede alrededor en la \u00e9poca en la que se produce, especialmente en lo que respecta a la gente joven.\u00a0En mi cortometraje incluyo terminolog\u00eda astrol\u00f3gica porque la gente joven utiliza este lenguaje. Para m\u00ed es como incluir una peque\u00f1a c\u00e1psula del tiempo. Poder decir, a trav\u00e9s de cosas hiperespec\u00edficas como esa: \u201cEsto es lo que estaba pasando.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u00bfY mostrar dualidad en roles de g\u00e9nero?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Una relaci\u00f3n, ya sea de amistad o rom\u00e1ntica, es como ser un equipo. A veces te toca de defensa, otras de delantero. Yo no creo en los roles de g\u00e9nero; los cuestiono.\u00a0En una relaci\u00f3n uno tiene que aportar sus puntos fuertes en beneficio del otro, centrarse en el otro m\u00e1s que en uno mismo. La masculinidad t\u00f3xica no hace eso; hace lo contrario. Se centra en s\u00ed misma. Es en situaciones como esas que se causa dolor a los dem\u00e1s.<\/p>\n

\"\"Es como pensar que un hombre tiene que ser fuerte. Eso es una muerte por mil cortes. Me gusta la subversi\u00f3n introducida en la pel\u00edcula, en la que Marisol toma el rol del cuidado f\u00edsico y Willy, el del cuidado psicol\u00f3gico.<\/p>\n

La pandemia separ\u00f3, en cualquier caso, a la gente e impidi\u00f3 el cuidado tanto f\u00edsico como psicol\u00f3gico de muchas personas.<\/p>\n

\u00bfPor qu\u00e9 cree que es importante el contacto humano?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Cuando comenc\u00e9 a escribir la pel\u00edcula, siempre quise que acabase en un abrazo y no en un beso. Un abrazo es algo mucho m\u00e1s \u00edntimo. Es algo c\u00e1lido. La intimidad f\u00edsica es importante para compartir mutuamente la luz que cada uno lleva dentro.\u00a0Es as\u00ed como se siente un abrazo. Es por ello que se siente incluso m\u00e1s vulnerable un abrazo que un beso. Cuando besas hay pasi\u00f3n o momentaneidad. Un abrazo toma tiempo, un tiempo en el cual hay cosas que se dicen sin decir.<\/p>\n

Abrazar a alguien que est\u00e1 triste o est\u00e1 llorando es algo que beneficia a los dos: al que da el abrazo y al que recibe ese abrazo. En los brazos de alguien te puedes sentir seguro y tambi\u00e9n te puedes dejar llevar.<\/p>\n

En esa seguridad est\u00e1 el valor de la vida. Es como abrazar a tu madre, a tu padre, a tus hermanos. Te puedes quitar la armadura, ser t\u00fa mismo y conectar con el otro.<\/p>\n
