andA double bill of documentaries exploring the relationship between culture and politics will be screened Alborada Films this Thursday 19 January in East London.
The evening will start at 6 p.m. with the UK premiere of “The people’s Train of culture” (El tren popular de la Cultura), Carolina Espinoza’s documentary about an inspiring initiative under the government of Salvador Allende in Chile (1970-1973).
The ‘People’s Train of Culture’ wanted to create a National Institute of Arts and Culture and colleges of art in all the country’s provinces.
The film looks to establish links with aspects of the educational and cultural initiatives of Spain’s Second Republic, such as the Pedagogic Missions, the Theatre of the People and the Theatre of La Barraca. (Carolina is travelling to the UK to take part in a post-screening Q&A.)
This will be followed at 8 p.m. by the screening of “Fragments of a dream”, a new short documentary co-directed by Alborada Films’ Pablo Navarrete and Teilo Vellacott, who will both take part in a post-screening Q&A with others who feature in the film.
“Fragments of a Dream” journeys to ‘El Sueño Existe’ festival to spend time with the artists, activists and speakers, such as Jeremy Corbyn, who have taken inspiration from a faraway place and come together to celebrate their quest for a better world for all peoples and animals
Following the screenings, from 9 pm. to 11 pm. there will be a social (free entry) featuring DJs and live music from Chilean singer/songwriter Francisco Carrasco and Esteban Peréz.
