German Alvarez: That little place called home

He misses his home country, but he is still happy to be where he is today. He moved to London 20 years ago after living in Pereira, Colombia. He left at a young age with his older brother and mother to live with his aunt.

Usually a person has begun to establish their group of friends and social life at the age of 15.

Unfortunately, for German, he had a more difficult time creating any type of social life because most of his time was spent trying to learn English in order to better understand the English culture.

His family left in search of more work opportunities with better pay, in addition to a change in scenery. At the time, his home country was not doing so well and London seemed like the most viable option. His experience has been a positive one overall and that he has adjusted quite nicely to this new life: he studied here and now has a job and a nice place to live. He even calls London his home now, which is difficult for many immigrants to do no matter how long they have lived here.

He does go back to Colombia every December in order to catch up with family and it’s always wonderful being there surrounded by the people he loves.

He does miss everything about his Colombia, including the weather, the food, the people, and all of the things that he used to do as a young boy.

He thinks this isn’t a surprise, however, because he has always been close to all of the members within his family.

He loves his current job, which is working with cars, picking them up and making sure they are working properly. It took a while to get where he wanted to be, but so far he tells that he has no complaints about his life and just wants to live it to its fullest. German says that as humans, we naturally adapt to our environment, so although language was an issue when he first moved to London, it wasn’t one big enough to have a long lasting effect on his ability to live life.

He thinks that any country is just a country, so the experience you have depends on the situation at hand and what you make of it.

German says he is happy to be in London and although he will always know where his roots are, he feels like London has become the place that he can now call home.
