It was difficult for him at first, but moving to another country was something that he was able to do with his family by his side.

He moved to London with his family at the age of 17 from Pereira, Colombia. He had a slightly harder time adjusting to his new surroundings than his younger brother, though.
His family moved in order to change their scenery and find newer and better opportunities than the life that they had. They moved in with his aunt and from then on he found himself struggling to adjust to this new life. Leaving his home country at the age of 17, Jorge had already established his social life and had many friends and family that he was sad to leave behind.
When he left Colombia he felt that he had also left his lifestyle, and he knew that finding a new one was not going to be easy.
He also had a little more trouble with learning the English language than his younger brother since he had been speaking Spanish for an extra two years.
This made it even more difficult to establish a new group of friends and social life here.
However, Jorge said that he was luckier and had it much easier than most immigrants that come to London in search of a new life.
While other immigrants come with only a few items in tow, and no other person by their side, he came here with his immediate family and already had ties and connections in London. He said that he could not imagine coming here alone, because as a person you are basically beginning your life from scratch with no job, living situation, and in most cases there is a clear language barrier. He is thankful for his situation though, as well as the close connections he has with his family, both in London and in his home country. This made the adjustment smoother and more bearable.
Along with family and friends, Jorge also misses the weather and food as well, but that gives him a great excuse to take a trip back once a year.
Every December Jorge goes back to his home country with his family and enjoys the warmer weather, avoiding the cold.
Still in search of a job, Jorge said he has high hopes about his future in London and said that he does not think he will need to leave any time soon. He has already established his own family here and they are well off and happy to be where they are now.
