The vileness of continuing to attack and stigmatise Cuba

The fact that the United States has included Cuba on the list of sponsors of terrorism is a nonsense, an infamy that affects the daily lives of the people on the island. Therefore, today more than ever, we must redouble our efforts and concrete actions of international cooperation and solidarity.

Cuba has been the most supportive country in the world and, as has been repeatedly said, ‘has given not what it has left over, but even what it had in scarce quantities, which shows the altruism and generosity of its people’.

The above are the words of Argentine political scientist and essayist Atilio Borón, who has said that the inclusion of Cuba on this list ‘is an unspeakable infamy’. ‘If there is one country that has been a victim of terrorism, it has been Cuba’.

For Borón, in an exclusive interview with the press, terrorism means subjecting a nation to a complete blockade for more than 60 years. And it is done by ‘that country whose government in 1945 dropped the only two atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the greatest terrorist attack in the history of humanity’.

Borón recalled that Cuba has been the host and guarantor of all the negotiations that have taken place to advance the peace process in Colombia.

In his opinion, the Cuban government has reacted with dignity to the new measures and pressures of the current administration of Donald Trump and his Secretary of State, Marco Rubio.

On Rubio, he said he disagrees that he is a Cuban-American. ‘If he had a single drop of Cuban blood in his veins, he would not propose to inflict greater punishment, suffering and misfortune on the Cuban people. He is just another American, a servant of the imperial design,’ he stressed. Regarding the new attacks by Trump and Rubio against Havana, Borón urged a redoubling of efforts and concrete actions of international cooperation and solidarity, beyond diplomatic forums. He pointed out that Cuba needs more affective support and in this sense he praised the support provided by nations such as Mexico at delicate moments of the situation on the island.

Borón called for concrete actions to reciprocate Cuba’s help in many areas, including ophthalmological surgeries, as part of Operation Miracle, which restored sight to many people, or in education with the literacy programme ‘Yo sí puedo’ (Yes, I can).

Regarding Washington’s hostile policy, which has intensified under the current occupant of the White House, he explained, what lies behind it is the theory that if you make Cubans suffer, they will rise up in arms or stage huge popular demonstrations against the government.

‘Cubans may be annoyed with the power cuts or the lack of certain products, but they have a patriotic, Martiano (José Martí) and Fidelista (Fidel Castro) sentiment, which will never turn them into pawns in a project to destroy their economy or absorb Cuba into the United States,’ he remarked. PL
